The Chilka Lake Bird Sanctuary
is located in the state of Orissa
and is very near to Bhubneshwar city.
It is known to be the largest inland
salt-water lagoon in Asia. The lake
is spread over an area of 1100 square
Kms and acquires the shape of a pear.
The sound ecosystem of the lake attracts
the various species of birds and water
birds. The park is a home for both
native and migratory birds.
Chilka Lake Bird Sanctuary
is paradise for bird watchers. White
bellied sea eagles, greylag geese,
purple moorhen, jacana, herons and
flamingos are among the many species
which make the lake a bird watcher's
delight: Chilka, in fact, is home
to one of the world's largest breeding
colonies of flamingos. Chilka's
shores are home to blackbuck, spotted deer,
golden jackals and hyenas, and the lake
is rich in aquatic life- its waters harbour
around 160 species of fish, crustaceans
and other marine creatures, including the
famous Chilka dolphin.
