The Khangchendzonga National park, located in the foothills of Eastern Himalayas, was recognized as a national park on 26th August, 1977. It was after a due consideration of the floral, faunal, ecological, geomorphologic importance and the wildlife potentiality of the area.
The total area covered by the park is 849.50 Square Kms.
The park holds importance for its continuous tract of mountainous land with valleys of lush green forests, meadows, alpine lands reserved primarily for the conservation of its native wildlife and also for primitive wilderness, natural lakes, tumbling tributary streams, flowered fields and imposing canyon. The wildlife here comprises of Musk Deer, elusive Snow Leopard and the shy Himalayan Tahr, the Shape of Sikkim.

How to reach
   
Air :
Nearest Airport is Bagdogra, (222) km. Bagdogra is 124kms (4hours drive) from Gangtok, the capital. Indian airlines operate regular flights from Kolkata (Dum Dum airport), Delhi, Guwahati. Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation also operates a daily helicopter service flight from Bagdogra to Gangtok (20 minutes)

Rail :
Nearest Railhead Is Jalpaiguri ( 221km) and Siliguri junction which are connected to Calcutta, New Delhi, Guwahati and other major Indian cities.

Road :
Regular bus services connect Gangtok with Bagdogra (4 hours), Darjeeling(139 kms), Kalimpong, Siliguri(114 kms) Calcutta(725 kms) and Guwahati 589 kms.
